Shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar: how a shipment travels

Qatar shares a short land border with the Kingdom at the south-east of its peninsula, and there is a single crossing on it: Salwa on the Saudi side and Abu Samra on the Qatari side. Whatever leaves a Saudi city, a household, a car or a shop’s stock, ends up on the same final stretch: it reaches Al Ahsa, heads to Salwa for export clearance, crosses to Abu Samra for Qatari import clearance, and then drives roughly 90–100 km into Doha.

So the real difference between one origin and another is only the distance to Al Ahsa. Customers in Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and Al Ahsa sit next to the border and usually see delivery the following day. Riyadh is about 570 km from Doha, Qassim joins the Riyadh departures, and the western, northern and southern cities first have to cross the width of the Kingdom.

Al Saif groups shipments into trips that consolidate in Riyadh and the Eastern Province and then cross together with complete paperwork, so your goods are not held at the border over a missing document or a mismatched contents list.

Distance and time from Saudi cities to Doha

Origin Distance to Doha Road time, door to door Route note
Al Ahsa (Hofuf) ~270 km 1–2 days Nearest to Salwa
Dammam / Khobar / Dhahran ~400 km 1–2 days Via Al Ahsa
Riyadh ~570 km 2–3 days Urgent dedicated truck 24–36 h
Qassim (Buraidah) ~900 km 3–4 days Joins Riyadh trips
Jeddah ~1,500 km 4–5 days Via Riyadh then Al Ahsa
Makkah ~1,450 km 4–5 days Via Taif–Riyadh
Madinah ~1,420 km 4–5 days Via Qassim–Riyadh
Tabuk ~1,870 km 5–6 days Longest route
Khamis Mushait / Abha ~1,450 km 4–6 days Via Bisha–Riyadh

Times are approximate and count from collection day; they include packing, loading, both border procedures and delivery inside Qatar, and can stretch slightly during busy periods at the crossing.

The Salwa and Abu Samra crossings: what happens at the border

At Salwa the truck starts its exit formalities. The export authorisation has already been filed on the Fasah platform of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, together with the contents list and the sender’s details. The load is matched against the declaration, may be X-ray scanned, and is then released.

Moments later the truck enters Abu Samra, where Qatari import clearance takes place: documents are presented with the consignee’s details in Qatar (QID and mobile number) and the cargo may be inspected. Used personal furniture is normally treated differently from commercial goods, according to the regulations in force at the time of shipping.

💡 Practical note: the most common cause of border delays is a contents list that does not match the load, or a missing Qatari mobile number for the consignee. We review the list with you before loading and call the consignee before the truck reaches Abu Samra.

Why customers ship to Qatar with Al Saif

Someone shipping to Qatar is not just hiring a truck; they need someone to own the details. Who dismantles the wardrobe? Who writes the list? Who files the authorisation? Who calls the consignee in Doha? At Al Saif these are fixed steps in every job.

What we ship from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

Requests range from a family relocating for work in Doha, to a student sending luggage, a trader supplying a shop near Souq Waqif or in the Industrial Area, or an owner who wants to drive their own car in Qatar. Each needs its own loading method and pricing:

  • Household furniture: bedrooms, majlis seating, sofas, tables, kitchens, appliances and air conditioners.
  • Cars: sedans, SUVs and luxury cars, on open or enclosed carriers.
  • Boxes and bags: for students, employees, family gifts and personal belongings.
  • Commercial goods: packaged food, clothing, e-commerce stock, equipment and spare parts.
  • Office furniture: desks, chairs, filing cabinets and computers.
  • Special items: dates, local produce, perfumes and seasonal gifts within what the regulations allow.

Furniture moving to Qatar: the options

Not every move needs a full truck, so furniture travels in three main ways and you choose by volume, budget and date.

Shared load for one or two rooms

Your items ride with other customers’ goods bound for Qatar and you pay only for the space used. It suits a student or employee moving a bedroom and some boxes, from SAR 880 per room including dismantling and packing.

Dedicated dyna for a 2–3 bedroom apartment

A closed-box dyna carries your belongings alone and leaves on your date without waiting for the truck to fill. It starts from SAR 1,700 and is the usual choice for small families.

Trailer for villas and large homes

Villas with large majlis rooms, several bedrooms and a full kitchen get a closed trailer from SAR 7,900, with a packing crew working a full day or more depending on volume.

Luxury furniture and valuables

Imported bedroom sets, gilded majlis furniture, crystal chandeliers, antiques, pianos and marble tables are handled differently from everyday furniture. Marble is crated in timber, chandeliers are taken apart piece by piece into padded boxes, and gilded surfaces are wrapped in non-marking paper before bubble wrap. These pieces load at the front of the truck, away from heavy items, and are strapped in place.

Insurance for valuable pieces can be added on request, and each one is described clearly on the contents list so it can be checked easily on delivery in Qatar.

Dismantling, packing and assembly

Furniture arrives in Qatar intact when it was packed correctly. Al Saif starts with a walk-through of the home to decide what must be dismantled, then works in a fixed order:

  1. Dismantling: wardrobes, beds and desks, with screws and fittings bagged, numbered and taped to the piece itself.
  2. Layered packing: moving blankets for wood, bubble wrap for glass and screens, corrugated board for edges and corners.
  3. Numbering and contents list: every box has a number matching a line on the list, the same list filed on Fasah.
  4. Planned loading: heavy at the bottom, light on top, glass and electronics in the middle away from the walls.
  5. Assembly in Qatar: the crew unloads, assembles beds and wardrobes, places every piece in its room and removes the packing materials.

The work also covers removing and packing window and split air conditioners, and taking down aluminium or wooden kitchens for refitting where the new home’s dimensions allow.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

Cars go to Qatar by road on car carriers through Salwa and Abu Samra; we do not ship cars by sea because the road is shorter and faster. Each car is inspected at collection, photographed from every side, its odometer and bodywork recorded, and then secured to the carrier with wheel straps.

Carrier types and prices

Transport Starts from Suits
Sedan on a shared open carrier SAR 1,100 Everyday family cars
SUV SAR 1,400 4x4s and large vehicles
Enclosed carrier (VIP) SAR 1,850 Luxury, classic and new cars

Enclosed VIP car shipping

In an enclosed carrier the car travels inside a box that shields it from dust, sun and flying gravel, which matters to owners of sports, classic and brand-new cars. It is loaded on a hydraulic platform rather than winched, and only a small number of cars share the carrier.

Car shipping steps

  1. Send the registration and ID so ownership can be verified.
  2. Obtain export plates or an export certificate, according to the regulations in force at the time of shipping.
  3. Get a bank letter if the car is financed or mortgaged.
  4. The car is collected from your home or a consolidation point, inspected and photographed.
  5. It crosses Salwa and Abu Samra and is delivered in Doha or the Qatari city you choose.

Commercial goods and e-commerce shipping

Trade between the Kingdom and Qatar is busy in food, building materials, clothing and household supplies. Commercial cargo moves in two ways:

  • Part load (LTL): priced per cubic metre or per tonne, from SAR 420 per cubic metre or SAR 420 per tonne, suited to a trader sending a few pallets.
  • Full load (FTL): a dedicated dyna or lorry from SAR 1,700, or a full trailer for large volumes, scheduled around the trader’s date.

Saudi online stores selling to customers in Qatar save by consolidating orders into one shipment to a warehouse or distribution address in Doha, lowering the cost per order. Commercial cargo needs a commercial registration, an invoice, a packing list, a certificate of origin, and a health certificate for food.

Parcels, boxes and bags

Many shipments to Qatar are small: a student’s suitcase, boxes of books, family gifts, or things left behind after a move. A box or bag up to 30 kg starts from SAR 120, and larger quantities are charged per kilo on shared road freight from SAR 7.5. We collect from home, wrap bags in protective covers and label every box with the consignee’s name and Qatari number.

📦 Box tip: use new, sturdy boxes, keep each under 25–30 kg, and write the contents briefly on every box; it speeds up matching at Abu Samra.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

These are Al Saif’s starting prices, the same from every Saudi city. Cost rises with distance for cities far from the border, and the itemised quote confirms the final price of your shipment.

Shipment Starts from
Box or bag up to 30 kg SAR 120
Boxes per kg (shared road) SAR 7.5 / kg
One room with dismantling and packing (shared) SAR 880
2–3 bedroom apartment (dedicated dyna) SAR 1,700
Large villa (trailer) SAR 7,900
Sedan (shared open carrier) SAR 1,100
SUV SAR 1,400
Enclosed car carrier SAR 1,850
Commercial goods per cubic metre SAR 420
Commercial goods per tonne SAR 420
Dedicated truck (dyna / lorry) SAR 1,700
Air freight per kg SAR 46

How the cost is calculated

Four things set the price: volume (rooms or cubic metres), distance from your city to Salwa, transport type (shared, dedicated or air) and extras such as dismantling, assembly, a furniture hoist for high floors, storage and insurance. Air freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, where volumetric weight = L × W × H ÷ 6000 (in cm).

Example: a 60 × 50 × 40 cm box weighing 10 kg has a volumetric weight of 120,000 ÷ 6000 = 20 kg, so it is charged at 20 kg by air.

How to save on shipping to Qatar

  • Leave heavy old pieces behind; buying a replacement in Qatar is sometimes cheaper than moving it.
  • Choose shared freight if your date is flexible.
  • Send small boxes together in one shipment rather than in batches.
  • Book a few days ahead to catch the next trip bound for Qatar.
  • Use air only for urgent items and send the rest by road.

Customs and documents

Documents depend on the shipment type, all according to the regulations in force at the time of shipping:

Shipment Documents
Furniture and personal effects ID or iqama, passport, contents list, Fasah authorisation, Qatari consignee details (QID and mobile)
Cars Registration, owner’s ID, export plates or export certificate, bank letter for a financed car
Commercial goods Commercial registration, invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, health certificate for food

Prohibited items

We cannot accept flammables, gas cylinders, loose batteries, medicines without a prescription, or plants and seeds without a permit. Drain fuel from small engines and clean and dry fridges the day before loading.

Road, air and sea: when to use each

Mode Time Suits
Road 1–6 days by city Furniture, cars, boxes and goods
Air 1–2 days Documents, bags and urgent parcels
Sea By sailing schedule Full commercial containers only

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

When time comes first, we fly the shipment to Hamad International Airport in Doha. Departures are from King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz in Jeddah and King Fahd in Dammam, plus Al Ahsa, Qassim (Prince Nayef), Madinah, Tabuk and Abha airports depending on your city. It arrives in 1–2 days door to door, from SAR 46 per kg on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher.

Air suits documents, luggage needed on arrival, urgent spare parts and product samples. Furniture and heavy loads are far more economical by road.

Sea freight for commercial containers

Sea is an option for traders and factories sending full containers: the container loads at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and sails to Hamad Port in Qatar, suiting building materials, heavy equipment and large volumes that are not urgent. We do not use sea for household furniture or cars, because the road via Salwa is shorter, faster and reaches the door directly.

Delivery across Qatar

After Abu Samra the truck heads north to Doha, and from there shipments are distributed across the country. Extra time from Doha:

Qatari city Added to Doha time
Doha Main arrival point
Al Wakrah Same day
Al Rayyan Same day
Umm Salal Usually same day
Lusail About a day
Al Khor About a day
Mesaieed About a day
Dukhan 1–2 days
Al Shamal and Al Ruwais 1–2 days

In Doha we deliver to residential districts, compounds and towers such as Al Dafna, West Bay, Madinat Khalifa, Old Airport and Ain Khaled. Lusail deliveries are often to residential towers that need the lift booked in advance, so we coordinate with the consignee and building management before arrival. Factory and trade shipments go to the Industrial Area and Mesaieed warehouses.

Steps to ship from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

  1. Contact: call 0555915287 or send photos of your items on WhatsApp.
  2. Quote: we size the job, choose the transport and send an itemised quote.
  3. Documents: you send your ID and consignee details; we prepare the contents list and Fasah authorisation.
  4. Collection: the crew arrives on time to dismantle, pack and load.
  5. Journey: the truck heads to Al Ahsa and on to Salwa.
  6. Crossing: export at Salwa, import at Abu Samra.
  7. Delivery: unloading and assembly at your address in Qatar.

Shipment tracking

From loading onwards you receive WhatsApp updates: photos of your goods inside the truck, a message at Salwa, another once Abu Samra is cleared, then the expected delivery time in Qatar. You can call the same number at any time for the shipment’s location, and the consignee gets the driver’s number before arrival.

Storage before shipping or after arrival

Sometimes a customer hands over their Saudi home before the Qatari one is ready, or arrives in Doha and stays in a hotel for a while. We then keep the furniture packed and numbered in a closed warehouse and ship it when the address is ready. Storage is priced by volume and duration, and the same contents list is the reference when goods come out.

Daily trips to Qatar

Because the Eastern Province and Riyadh are close to the border, Al Saif trips leave for Qatar almost daily, so you do not wait long for a truck to fill. From the western, northern and southern cities, shipments consolidate in Riyadh to catch the next departure towards Salwa.

The right time of year to ship to Qatar

Winter and spring are kinder to wood and electronics because of lower heat, and crews work longer, easier days. Demand rises before the school year, Ramadan and Eid, so book early in those periods. In summer we recommend an enclosed carrier for luxury cars, careful wrapping for appliances, and keeping candles and perfumes out of boxes.

Shipping from Qatar to Saudi Arabia

Our trucks do not return empty. We also move furniture, cars and boxes from Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah and the rest of Qatar to Riyadh, the Eastern Province, Jeddah and every Saudi city, with the same procedure through Abu Samra then Salwa, dismantling in Qatar and assembly in the Kingdom.
