Shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Turkey: how your shipment actually travels

Many customers ask us straight away whether their shipment goes to Turkey by truck. The practical answer is that sea is the right route for household furniture, cars and large cargo. The distance between the Kingdom and Turkey is long and crosses several borders, whereas a container is loaded at your door, closed and sealed, taken to the port and sailed to the Turkish port without anyone opening it on the way. That is why every furniture and car shipment we send to Turkey goes by sea, and we use air freight only for what is light or urgent.

The voyage usually starts at Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea. The ship heads north through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean and arrives at Mersin in southern Turkey, the Turkish port closest to this route. Alternatively it continues to Izmir on the Aegean, or passes through the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmara to Ambarli port on the European side of Istanbul. Shipments from King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam sail around the Arabian Peninsula before entering the Red Sea, so for long transits Jeddah is usually the better choice, while Dammam serves Eastern Province customers on some shipments depending on the sailings available.

Customers in inland cities such as Riyadh, Qassim, Hail and Madinah do not need to travel to a port. We collect the furniture from the house, pack and number it, and load it into the container or a closed truck that takes it to Jeddah or Dammam port. Export procedures are completed there through the Fasah platform and the container is loaded onto the ship. You receive the container number and bill of lading so you can follow the journey step by step.

Sea or air: which suits your shipment to Turkey?

The simple rule is that anything measured in cubic metres goes by sea, and anything measured in a few kilograms may go by air. Bedrooms, majlis seating, kitchens, fridges, cars and commercial cargo are all sea shipments, because air freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Furniture is relatively light but bulky, which makes air very expensive for it. Official documents, gifts, clothes in one or two bags, small spare parts and commercial samples, on the other hand, reach Istanbul by air within a few days.

Why customers choose Al Saif for shipping to Turkey

Shipping to Turkey is not just booking space on a ship. It is a chain of steps that starts in your bedroom and ends in your flat in Istanbul or your house in Trabzon, and every link needs someone following it. We handle all of the links, or whichever ones you choose:

  • Our own packing team: dismantling, suitable layers of packing for every piece, numbered cartons and the contents list that customs require.
  • Collection from every Saudi city: our trucks collect from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah, Madinah, Qassim, Al Ahsa, Tabuk, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, Najran and Hail.
  • Two options on arrival: port to door with delivery and assembly on request, or port to port with collection by a Turkish clearance agent of your choice.
  • An itemised quote: sea freight, destination port charges, inland delivery and Turkish clearance shown line by line.
  • Continuous tracking: container number, bill of lading, sailing date and expected arrival.
  • Optional insurance: insurance can be added for valuable items on request.
  • One number: call 0555915287 and follow your shipment with the same person until delivery.

We know that a customer shipping to Turkey may be a Saudi family furnishing a summer home in Trabzon, an expat moving with his family to live in Istanbul, a student at a university in Ankara, or a trader importing and exporting between the two countries. Each has different needs, so we always start by asking about the purpose of the shipment before suggesting the right container.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

The prices below are starting prices for shipping from the Kingdom to Turkey and are the same for every city. The final price depends on the volume, the destination port and the Turkish city of delivery. Destination port charges, inland delivery within Turkey and Turkish customs clearance are set line by line in the itemised quote.

Shared container per CBM Request a quote Depends on volume and destination port

What raises or lowers the price?

The biggest factor is volume: one room in a shared container is very different from a whole villa in a 40 ft container. Next comes the destination port. Mersin is closer on the sea route, while Istanbul is further but closer to your home if you live on the European or Asian side of the city, and arriving there directly can save a long inland haul within Turkey. The third factor is the service: port to door with dismantling and assembly, or port to port only. The type of furniture matters too, since antiques, glass and marble need wooden crates and large kitchens need careful dismantling and numbering. Finally the season plays a part, as demand for shipping to Turkey rises before summer when families furnish their summer homes.

Tips to save on shipping to Turkey

  • Leave behind heavy, cheap items: old appliances and worn mattresses may cost less to buy new in Turkey than to ship.
  • Choose the container by real volume: if your furniture fills half a 40 ft container, a well-packed 20 ft may be enough.
  • Shared container for one or two rooms: you pay only for your volume.
  • Combine furniture and car: a car with furniture in a 40 ft container can cost less than shipping each separately.
  • Book before the season: booking ahead of summer gives you more sailing options.
  • The cheapest way for parcels: combine them into one air shipment instead of several separate parcels.

Furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

Moving a home to Turkey starts with a visit or a video call in which our team estimates the volume, and then we agree a packing day with you. On that day the team arrives with packing materials: reinforced cartons, bubble wrap, moving blankets, corner protectors and wooden crates for delicate pieces. Everything that can be dismantled is dismantled, screws go into numbered bags taped to each piece, and every carton is labelled with its number, contents and the room it came from, so that the delivery team in Turkey knows where each item belongs in the new home.

The contents list is not a formality: it is one of the documents checked at export and at clearance in Turkey. We therefore write it carefully, with the number of cartons, a description of large pieces and the types of electrical appliances. We advise you to keep a copy and to photograph valuable items before packing.

Bedrooms and majlis seating

The bed is dismantled into headboard, sides and base, and the mattress is sealed in a thick plastic cover that keeps out moisture during the sea voyage. Wardrobes are dismantled into panels, each protected with cardboard and corners, and mirrors go into separate boxes. Arabic majlis seating and sofas are wrapped in bubble wrap and then blankets, and loaded so that nothing heavy presses on them. Carpets are rolled into cylinders and wrapped against dust.

Kitchens, including IKEA kitchens

The kitchen is one of the things customers ask about most, since many have a custom aluminium or wooden kitchen made to fit their home, or an IKEA kitchen. IKEA kitchens are designed to be dismantled and reassembled, so we take them apart unit by unit, keep the screws and hinges for each unit in a separate bag, and photograph the layout before dismantling so it can be rebuilt as it was. Custom kitchens are dismantled with care, but bear in mind that wall dimensions in your Turkish home may differ, so the kitchen may need adjusting during installation. Marble and granite worktops travel upright in wooden crates, because they break if laid flat under a load.

Appliances and air conditioners

The fridge is emptied, cleaned and left with its doors slightly open for a day before shipping so it dries out. The washing machine’s drum is secured with transit bolts, and ovens and microwaves are boxed. Air conditioners are removed from the wall by a technician who recovers the gas properly, and indoor and outdoor units are shipped wrapped. Turkey uses 220 volts, which suits most appliances used in the Kingdom at 220 volts, but check the label on each appliance and prepare plug adaptors, since Turkish sockets have a different shape.

Antiques and office furniture

Antiques, chandeliers, glassware and pottery get wooden crates made to size, with shock-absorbing material filling the space around them. For companies and offices moving to Turkey or opening a branch there, we dismantle desks, chairs and filing cabinets, pack electronics and screens in their original boxes or padded cartons, and number everything by office or department. Insurance can be added for valuable items on request.

Trucking furniture from inland cities to Jeddah or Dammam port

If you live in Riyadh, Buraidah, Hail, Madinah or Abha, your furniture makes a road journey within the Kingdom before it reaches the port. We load it into a closed truck, or bring the container itself to your door on a truck, load it in front of you and seal it, and it then heads to Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. This way your furniture is not reloaded at the port, and the container stays closed from your door to the Turkish port.

Sea freight from Saudi Arabia to Turkey by container

Sea freight is the heart of our Turkey service. We offer two kinds of container: a full container (FCL), 20 ft or 40 ft, reserved for you alone, and a shared container (LCL), where your furniture travels with other customers’ shipments to Turkey and you pay only for your volume. A 20 ft container usually suits the furniture of a two- or three-bedroom flat, and a 40 ft suits a villa, a large home, or a home’s furniture together with a car.

A furniture and car container from Jeddah Islamic Port to Mersin and Istanbul — Al Saif
A furniture and car container from Jeddah Islamic Port to Mersin and Istanbul — Al Saif

From Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam the container sails to one of the Turkish ports: Mersin in the south, the closest on the route, serving Adana, Gaziantep, Konya and Antalya; Iskenderun in the south-east; Izmir on the Aegean for the western cities; or Ambarli in Istanbul for the city, Bursa, Yalova, Sakarya and Kocaeli. We choose the destination port with you according to the city you will live in, since a port closer to your home means a shorter inland haul in Turkey.

Destination port Approx. port-to-port time Usually serves
Mersin 15–20 days Mersin, Adana, Gaziantep, Konya, Antalya, the south
Istanbul / Ambarli 18–25 days Both sides of Istanbul, Bursa, Yalova, Sakarya, Kocaeli
Izmir Depends on sailing schedule Izmir and the Aegean cities
Iskenderun Depends on sailing schedule Hatay and the south-east

Add to this the trucking within the Kingdom to the port, clearance at the Turkish port and delivery to your address. Times are approximate and depend on ship schedules and transhipment at some intermediate ports.

Port to door or port to port?

With port to door, once the container arrives our agent clears it at the Turkish port, and we truck the furniture to your address, unload it, carry it into the flat and assemble it on request. This suits families who do not know the procedures in Turkey and do not want to deal with the port. With port to port, our job ends when the container reaches the Turkish port, and the consignee collects it through a Turkish clearance agent of their own choosing. This option is preferred by people with contacts in Turkey or traders who work with a particular agent. Either way, we provide every document the agent needs.

Coverage of Turkish cities

We deliver throughout Turkey through our port agents and inland transport partners. The cities our customers ask for most:

  • Istanbul – European side: Başakşehir, Esenyurt, Beylikdüzü, Fatih, Büyükçekmece, Avcılar, Bahçeşehir.
  • Istanbul – Asian side: Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Ataşehir, Ümraniye, Maltepe, Pendik.
  • Bursa: Osmangazi, Nilüfer, Yıldırım and the Uludağ area.
  • Ankara: Çankaya, Keçiören, Yenimahalle, Etimesgut.
  • Izmir and Antalya: the western and southern coastal cities.
  • Trabzon: Uzungöl, Akçaabat, Yomra and summer homes in the highlands.
  • Konya, Gaziantep and Mersin: central and southern Turkey.
  • Yalova, Sakarya and Sapanca: nature and lakeside homes near Istanbul.

Delivering to Istanbul apartment buildings takes planning. Some older districts have narrow streets that large trucks cannot enter, so we use a smaller truck or an external furniture lift for tall buildings, and ask you to inform the building management of the delivery time. In Trabzon and the highlands, mountain roads may also call for a smaller truck.

Saudi and Gulf families with property in Turkey

Many Saudi and Gulf families own a flat in Istanbul or a house in Trabzon, Bursa or Yalova where they spend the summer. They usually ship part of a household: Arabic majlis seating made to their size, carpets, kitchenware, or appliances they are used to. A shared container or a 20 ft container suits these shipments, and we arrange delivery for when they arrive or storage until they do. We advise booking well before the season so the furniture arrives ahead of the family.

Expats moving to Turkey to live, and students at its universities, have different shipments. A student usually needs bags, books and a computer, which suit air freight or a small sea shipment, while a whole family relocating needs a full container and a sailing date coordinated with the date they take over their home in Turkey.

Shipping commercial goods from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

Trade between the Kingdom and Turkey is active in both directions, and we serve traders, factories and online stores shipping by sea and air. Dates and packaged foods, plastics and petrochemicals, perfumes and oud, and equipment are all shipments we handle once their Turkish import requirements are confirmed.

Partial and full loads

Partial loads suit a trader shipping a number of pallets or cartons: they go in a shared container and are priced by volume or weight. Full loads get a 20 ft or 40 ft container that is loaded at the trader’s warehouse, sealed and shipped directly. Commercial goods start from SAR 2,300 per ton, with the final price depending on the type of goods, their volume and the destination port.

Documents for commercial goods

  • Commercial registration.
  • Commercial invoice.
  • Packing list.
  • Certificate of origin.

Some goods may need additional certificates in Turkey depending on their type, and we review this with you and the Turkish importer before shipping.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

Cars are shipped to Turkey by sea in one of two ways. With RoRo, the car is driven onto a vessel built for vehicles, secured there, and driven off at the Turkish port, which suits ordinary cars. In a container, the car is secured with straps and chocks inside a closed container, which is better for luxury and classic cars, or when you want to ship the car together with your furniture in a 40 ft container.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Turkey in an enclosed container — Al Saif
Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Turkey in an enclosed container — Al Saif

A sedan starts from SAR 5,100, an SUV from SAR 7,500, and a car in its own enclosed container from SAR 12,000. The price covers sea freight; Turkish port charges, clearance and the car’s customs duties vary with the owner’s status and the type of entry, and are shown in the itemised quote.

Car shipping documents

  • Vehicle registration.
  • Owner’s ID or iqama.
  • Export plates or export certificate.
  • A bank letter if the car is financed.

Before you ship your car to Turkey

Importing cars into Turkey has its own rules, which differ depending on your situation: a returning Turkish citizen, a resident with a residence permit, a visitor seeking temporary import, or someone who wants to sell the car there. Each case has its own conditions and charges, and they change from time to time. Before shipping, we therefore advise you to confirm your car’s situation with Turkish Customs or the Turkish consulate and find out the expected charges, which can be substantial for some types of car. We help you prepare the export documents in the Kingdom, and our agent in Turkey handles clearance in accordance with the regulations in force at the time of shipping. We run the fuel tank down to a minimum and do not allow personal items inside a car shipped by RoRo.

Customs, exemptions and required documents

The shipment goes through two procedures: export from the Kingdom through Fasah at Jeddah or Dammam port, and import into Turkey through Turkish Customs at the destination port. On the Saudi side we need a Fasah authorisation from you so we can handle the procedures in your name, and we submit the contents list and required documents.

On the Turkish side, customs treat personal effects and used furniture under specific rules. A returning Turkish citizen, a foreigner with a residence permit, or someone transferring their residence may be able to obtain an exemption from some charges on used furniture, provided they submit documents such as a residence permit or a transfer-of-residence certificate. These rules are set by Turkish Customs and change, so we describe them here in general terms and advise you to confirm with Turkish Customs or the Turkish consulate before shipping which conditions apply to you. Shipments that do not qualify for an exemption are cleared in accordance with the regulations in force at the time of shipping, and the charges are shown in the quote.

Documents for moving furniture to Turkey

  • National ID or iqama.
  • Passport.
  • Contents list.
  • Fasah authorisation.
  • Consignee’s details in Turkey: passport, Turkish tax number and address.

Foreigners obtain a Turkish tax number from tax offices in Turkey or through the consulate, and it is required for most import procedures. If the consignee is someone else, such as a relative or a friend, we need their full details.

Parcels, bags and e-commerce to Turkey

Not all shipping to Turkey is containers. Many customers send small parcels: clothes for children studying there, gifts for relatives, perfumes and dates for Ramadan and Eid, or an extra bag that did not fit in the airline allowance. A parcel up to 5 kg starts from SAR 110 by air, and documents from SAR 85. For online stores selling to customers in Turkey we offer regular air freight charged per kg, with consignee details and a tracking number for each parcel.

We weigh large bags and measure them, because air freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, and volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6000. A large, light bag can therefore have a volumetric weight higher than its real weight.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Istanbul Airport

We ship by air from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and other city airports to Istanbul Airport, Turkey’s main air cargo hub, as well as to Sabiha Gökçen Airport on Istanbul’s Asian side, Antalya Airport and Ankara Esenboğa Airport. Transit is usually 2–4 days, from SAR 14 per kg.

Air freight from Saudi airports to Istanbul Airport — Al Saif
Air freight from Saudi airports to Istanbul Airport — Al Saif

Air freight suits official documents and certificates needed for a procedure in Turkey, urgent spare parts, commercial samples, prescription medicines in permitted quantities and small gifts. It does not suit large furniture, because volumetric weight drives the cost up sharply; in that case we recommend sea freight.

Prohibited items and packing

We do not accept the following in shipments to Turkey:

  • Flammable materials such as petrol, alcohol, paints and aerosols.
  • Gas cylinders, even empty ones.
  • Loose batteries.
  • Medicines without a prescription.
  • Plants and seeds without a permit.

We also advise you not to put cash, jewellery or original documents in the container, and to carry them with you. Packing depends on the shipment: furniture going by sea needs protection from moisture because the voyage is long, so we use thick plastic and place moisture absorbers inside the container, while air parcels need strong cartons that withstand repeated handling.

Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

  1. Contact: call or WhatsApp 0555915287 with a description of the shipment and the Turkish city.
  2. Survey: a visit or video call to estimate the volume and suggest the right container.
  3. Quote: you receive an itemised quote covering freight, destination charges, clearance and delivery.
  4. Documents: send your ID, passport and consignee details, and authorise us on Fasah.
  5. Packing and loading: the team arrives on time, dismantles, packs, loads and seals the container.
  6. To the port and sailing: the container goes to Jeddah or Dammam port and is loaded on the ship.
  7. Arrival and clearance: our agent or your own agent clears it at the Turkish port.
  8. Delivery: we deliver to your address and assemble on request.

Tracking and storage

After sailing you receive the container number and bill of lading and can follow the ship’s position, and we tell you the expected arrival date and any schedule change. If your home in Turkey is not ready, or you want to gather your furniture in stages before shipping, we offer storage in a closed warehouse in the Kingdom before shipping, or in Turkey after arrival through our partners, priced by volume and duration.

Shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia

We also serve the reverse route: families returning from living in Turkey to the Kingdom, students after graduation, and traders importing Turkish furniture, textiles, carpets and building materials. The container is loaded in Istanbul, Bursa or Mersin, sails to Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, is cleared through Saudi customs in accordance with the regulations in force at the time of shipping, and is delivered to your home or warehouse in any city.

When to ship to Turkey

Demand for shipping to Turkey peaks before summer, when families furnish summer homes in Trabzon, Bursa, Yalova and Sakarya, and before the academic year, when students and families relocate. Shared containers fill quickly in these periods, so book early. If your date is flexible, shipping in autumn or winter gives you wider sailing options, and well-packed furniture is not affected by winter cold during the voyage.
